Strikeforce signs UFC veteran Nate Marquardt, fight with Tyron Woodley possible

In June, the UFC cut middleweight Nate Marquardt after he could not get medical clearance to fight at UFC on Versus 4 just hours before he was scheduled to weigh in. Now, he is back in the Zuffa fold, as Strikeforce signed him to fight in their welterweight division.

His signing will strengthen a promotion that has seen four champions flee to the UFC. A bout with Tyron Woodley is reportedly in the works. Marquardt brings a recognizable name and a well-rounded game to Strikeforce.

Marquardt fought in 14 bouts for the UFC before his out-of-whack testosterone levels caused the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission to deny his chance to fight in the main event. He was immediately dismissed from the UFC by an angry Dana White.

He briefly signed with the British promotion BAMMA, but a fight never materialized. Bellator's Hector Lombard invited Marquardt to fight him in Bellator, but Marquardt didn't take the bait. His last bout was a decision win over Dan Miller at UFC 128.

License loss ordered in Kansas abortion case

A state administrative judge has ordered the revocation of a Kansas doctor's license over her referrals of young patients to the late Dr. George Tiller for late-term abortions, concluding their care was "seriously jeopardized" by inadequate mental health examinations.

  1. Don't miss these Health stories

    1. Gluten-free diet may be a waste of money for some

Gluten-free products are everywhere, but many people who buy them are probably wasting their money, according to new Italian research.

    2. Teens need less sleep? 7 hours may be enough
    3. Hospitals scramble for scarce kids' cancer drug
    4. Arsenic found in organic cereal bars
    5. Amid shortages, hospitals trash scarce drugs

In an order that became public Tuesday, the judge said Dr. Ann Kristen Neuhaus failed to meet accepted standards of care in performing exams on 11 patients, ages 10 to 18, who had late-term abortions at Tiller's clinic in Wichita from July to November 2003. The judge said Neuhaus' records did not contain the information necessary to show she did thorough exams.

Tiller needed an opinion from another doctor to terminate the pregnancies because Kansas law restricted late-term abortions at the time. Neuhaus said each patient's mental health issues were serious enough to allow each procedure to go forward.

Neuhaus, from Nortonville, a small town about 30 miles north of Lawrence, doesn't have an active medical practice, but her license allows her to provide limited charity care, and she's seeking to make it fully active again. It wasn't clear Tuesday how quickly she'd have to stop providing charity care under Judge Ed Gaschler's order.

The order must be reviewed by the State Board of Healing Arts, which licenses and regulates physicians, most likely at an April 13 meeting. If the board makes Gaschler's order final, Neuhaus still could file a legal challenge in state district court.

"We are in the process of reviewing the order and whether an appeal is advisable," said Bob Eye, a Topeka attorney representing Neuhaus.

Gaschler heard evidence on a complaint filed by the Board of Healing Arts' top litigation attorney in April 2010. The case centered on how Neuhaus reached her conclusions and whether she adequately documented the reasons behind each diagnosis. Her reports, compiled with a "PsychManager Lite" computer program, were five pages or less and don't cite details from patients' statements or data gleaned from her exams.

The administrative judge said that in some cases, the young patients were described as suicidal, but Neuhaus didn't recommend further treatment. The judge said Neuhaus simply "answered yes/no questions" using the computer program and assigned whatever diagnosis "the computer gave."

"The care and treatment of the 11 patients in question was seriously jeopardized by the Licensee's care," Gaschler wrote.

But Julie Burkhart, a former Tiller employee and founder of the abortion-rights group Trust Women, questioned whether Neuhaus' case was handled fairly and whether Neuhaus can receive a fair hearing from the Board of Healing Arts, with Gov. Sam Brownback, a strong abortion opponent, in office. Burkhart said Neuhaus is a target for anti-abortion officials.

"There's a political agenda here, and it seems that Dr. Neuhaus is the one who can be brought before the board and punished," Burkhart said after reviewing the order. "The agenda is to discredit her."

Gaschler signed the order and mailed it to the parties Friday. It became public Tuesday when the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue obtained a copy and posted it online.

The board's executive director, Kathleen Selzler Lippert, confirmed the authenticity of the posting but declined to comment because the board hasn't reviewed Gaschler's order.

The case initially stemmed from a complaint lodged in 2006 by Cheryl Sullenger, senior policy adviser for Operation Rescue, but abortion opponents had scrutinized Neuhaus' activities for years. Neuhaus performed abortions herself in Wichita and Lawrence but stopped in 2002.

She provided second opinions for Tiller from 1999 through 2006, when Kansas law restricted abortions starting at the 22nd week of pregnancy, if the fetus was viable. A patient had to face death or "substantial and irreversible" harm to "a major bodily function," including mental health. Legislators tightened the law last year so that it no longer includes the mental health exception.

"It was just a sham," Sullenger said, who praised Gaschler's order and described Neuhaus' as helping Tiller in "circumventing the law."

Tiller was among a few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortions and was shot to death in May 2009 by a man professing strong anti-abortion beliefs.

Tiller once faced misdemeanor criminal charges that alleged, in relying on Neuhaus for referrals, he wasn't getting the independent second medical opinion required by state law. He was acquitted two months before his murder, but at the time of his death, a separate complaint was pending before the Board of Healing Arts.

During her hearing, Neuhaus testified that she sometimes told patients they couldn't obtain abortions from Tiller, upsetting them.

But the anti-abortion group Kansans for Life said Gaschler reviewed "crushing evidence" against Neuhaus.

"There's no way that any fair-minded person could come to any other conclusion," said Mary Kay Culp, the group's executive director.

Brand New Kitchen Cabinets Tend To Be A Good Way To Enhance ...

Souces of heat pump prices and review; Carmen J. Bryant

The easiest and possibly the best way to alter the look of your kitchen is to redesign your cabinets. When you walk into the kitchen and see your old cabinets, it might make you feel down. Especially when you have stayed in a dwelling for a long time, the cabinets which were in style when your house was built, no longer are. When you visit a friend, who lives in a newer home, and you see the new style of kitchen they have, you can only imagine them in your own kitchen. The heat pump may vary depending on your chosen brand and model.

If you install the ideal cabinets, you will not only enhance the look of the kitchen, but also the mood of everyone in your family. While redoing the entire kitchen is the best option, if you can?t afford to do it now, changing out the cabinets can be just as effective without taking much time. Perhaps the hardest thing to do is locating the cabinets to match your kitchen and home. The most appropriate style and the right color can make all of the difference. You can visit local home improvement merchants to check out their cabinets or start your search online. Going on line could be the easiest option since you can look at various websites to see what?s available and you don?t have to leave your home. The cost of ground-source heat pump may be about $5000-$10000.

Once you begin discovering styles that look good to you, you ought to consider some things. There?ll be variations that are all set to go where you simply decide on the style and color. Because of this approach, you can find cabinets at marked down prices. This tends to save you plenty of cash, if you are on a budget. Custom designed cabinets usually cost more, but they nevertheless can be found for those restricted by a budget. This is usually a great way to get what you want and custom designed to fit your kitchen. With the wide selection of heat pump reviews, designs and models posted on the internet, youve got better chances of scoring the best product suitable for your need.

Software applications that can create your virtual kitchen can help you come up with a design that will look good in your actual kitchen. Using the software package, you can try various designs to see and compare how they look. Colorations and styles can simply be changed so you?re able to see which one you like better. With each comparison, you?ll be able to get rid of the designs you don?t like and narrow it down to what works. Eliminating the cabinet styles that will not work will help you find the cabinets that will.

You don?t have to worry about whether you should get ready made cabinets or custom made cabinets since they are both good investments. Adding new kitchen cabinets to improve the look of your home is going to improve the value as well.

DreamWorks Animation Forms Studio With Chinese Partners ...

February 17, 2012, 5:23 pm By BROOKS BARNES

DreamWorks Animation on Friday announced a long-anticipated deal with three Chinese companies to form a family-entertainment studio in Shanghai.

The animation studio will join with China Media Capital, Shanghai Media Group and Shanghai Alliance Investment Ltd. in spending $330 million to open a new company they are calling Oriental DreamWorks. The Chinese companies will hold a 55 percent stake in the new company, with DreamWorks Animation controlling the rest.

That capitalization is small; DreamWorks Animation, the maker of ?Kung Fu Panda,? spends about that much to make and market a single movie in the United States. But Jeffrey Katzenberg, the chief executive of DreamWorks Animation, nonetheless positioned the deal as ?groundbreaking and historic,? in part because the parade of other movie companies that have already announced Chinese movie deals ? Relativity Media, Legendary Entertainment ? are not focused on the family market.

Oriental DreamWorks is not expected to release a movie until 2016; yet, even before the official announcement, the enterprise drew criticism from The Wall Street Journal?s editorial page as an example of the barriers to competition in China.

DreamWorks Animation shares closed on Friday afternoon at $19.52, up almost 1 percent.

Great Book For Stepparents | Real Moms guide

If you?re a stepparent grappling with a new relationship and also learning to love and live with young children, My Bonus Mom! Taking the Step out of Stepmom is a charming little book that may very well bring your new family closer together and help ease the tension of divorce and remarriage.

It?s the true story of a then young girl whose parents were divorced and what happened when her father began dating another woman. Told in a very cute rhyming story, it?s a perfect read for the younger set dealing with new family territory and finding their way into new families. The story also explains that divorce is not the fault of the child, which can be a very scary part of the process.

My Bonus Mom shows how a stepmom can bring so much into the family, and not take away from relationships, that she?s not the ?bad guy? but another person who is coming into the family to love and nurture.

Author Tami Butcher has written a tender and sweet story that I wish many of my friends and family members would have known about during difficult times ? it may have helped make transitioning from divorce to remarriage and step-parenting a kinder, gentler, more loving experience for many of them.

Maybe this book, which is beautifully illustrated by Feras Nouf, will help those around you as well. You can learn more about it at www.MyBonusMomBook.com.

Europe's Internet revolt: protesters see threats in antipiracy treaty

Anger over proposed antipiracy treaty ACTA was expected to bring thousands to Europe's streets today. Supporters say it will better protect intellectual labor, while opponents see free speech threats.?

Despite freezing conditions across much of the Continent, thousands are expected to the streets of European cities today ? but the protests aren't about austerity measures, bailouts, or the Middle East. They are about an obscure international copyright agreement that protesters say threatens free speech online and the future of the Internet.?

ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, follows the now-delayed US legislation Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). Proponents say the agreement will protect the economic value of intellectual and artistic labor and create a framework to enforce existing laws. Opponents counter that it forces Internet service providers (ISPs) to police users, threatening individual freedom.?

Confusion reigns: previous drafts of ACTA would have required ISPs to disconnect users who repeatedly downloaded copyrighted material without permission, but the most recent versions leave the question of ISPs' legal liability to the participating countries. Other controversial measures, such as searches for counterfeit goods at border crossings, which many feared would apply to the contents of laptops and MP3 players, are restricted to commercial goods shipping. (To read the document, click?here.)

The European Commission and US Trade Representative have both issued "myth-busting" documents attempting to allay the worst fears.

Despite this and changes to the text, ACTA remains a heated point of contention.

Sebastian Meyer, attorney with law firm Brandi in Bielefeld, Germany, says the entire affair would have benefited from greater transparency.?

"I find it quite interesting that most persons who protest against ACTA focus on the way the text was negotiated. The other major issue seems [to be] ? from the perspective of the protesting persons ? the fear of a tighter surveillance of Internet usage. However, protesters have to accept that the Internet is neither a legal vacuum nor unlegislated area," he says.

Twenty-two EU member states endorsed to the agreement last month, aiming to strengthen enforcement of intellectual property rights. Yesterday, Germany joined Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Latvia in pulling back from the agreement, and an EU parliament vote on it, not expected until May at the earliest, may scupper the deal. ?

Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and the US signed in October 2011.?

The Undertaker Who Helps Big Banks Write Death Plans | KOSU ...

Filed by KOSU News in Business.
February 10, 2012

The nation?s big banks are writing death plans ? living wills that spell out how, in a future crisis, they could be safely dismantled. The idea is that the death plans will help avoid another government bailout of the banks.

?You?re technically writing your own funeral, down to the color of the flowers? says Dolores Atallo.

Atallo runs the living wills team at the consulting firm Deloitte. She shows up to our interview wearing all black, and jokes that she moonlights as an undertaker.

?The regulators are your funeral directors,? she says. ?They tell you how you?re going to be unwound and then they stand over there and say, ?I?m very sorry for your loss.? ?

Each bank is now responsible for proving ? in detail ? that in a crisis situation it could fail without bringing down the financial system. In the case of giant banks, this is ridiculously complicated.

?It?s like looking at a bowl of spaghetti and saying, ?Do you know how many strings of pasta are in this bowl?? ? Atallo says. ?And that?s a question the banks need to be able to answer.?

That?s just the bank side. Now imagine you are the relatively small government agency that will have to actually execute that living will. Sell the bank?s assets. Close it down. Insure the depositors.

I watched one living wills meeting at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation where more than 20 people spent at least 15 minutes just discussing this one question: If the government took over a huge bank to wind down operations, who would be in charge?

It is reasonable to assume that these living will documents will never actually be used. When it comes down to the wire, the government will bail out the big banks. The government will once again make an exception.

Even if that?s true though, Dolores Atallo says planning for death is an incredibly useful exercise. You learn things. You find things in the basement that have no business being there.

?There are legal entities that exist for no reason at financial institutions because they existed for a purpose that people forgot about and its on the books,? she says.

At the very least, planning for the end is an interesting thought experiment. An enormous institution can take a good look at itself and ask: Do things really need to be this way? Thinking about death sometimes changes the way you decide to live. [Copyright 2012 National Public Radio]

NEWARK, Del. ? Elena Delle Donne had 27 points and 15 rebounds to lead No. 12 Delaware to its 11th straight victory, a 76-63 win over Old Dominion on Thursday night.

The Blue Hens (21-1, 12-0 Colonial Athletic Association) led from start to finish although they had to withstand a rally by the Monarchs (6-16, 5-7) in the second half. The country's leading scorer at 28.1 points per game, Delle Donne hit 11-of-24 shots from the floor.

Lauren Carra added 18 points for Delaware while teammate Danielle Parker scored 13. The Hens finished with a 48-41 edge in rebounds.

Tia Lewis had a team-high 15 points for Old Dominion with Myeisha Hall adding 14 and Jackie Cook scoring 11.

The victory was only the fifth for Delaware in 22 all-time games against Old Dominion.

The Monarchs beat the Hens twice in the regular season last year before the Hens downed Old Dominion in the CAA quarterfinals.

Delaware led by as many as 23 points midway through the second half before Old Dominion rallied. The Monarchs used a 24-9 run in one seven-minute stretch to cut the Hens' lead to 62-54 on Hall's 3-pointer with 6:45 left.

Old Dominion never got closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Hens closed out the victory by tallying 12 of the contest's final 19 points.

Leading 34-24 at halftime, Delaware started the second half on a 10-2 run to stretch its advantage to 44-26. Carra sank a pair of three-pointers in that run.

Delaware opened up its halftime lead behind 11 points and seven rebounds from Delle Donne.

The Hens' first double-digit lead came at 26-16 when Delle Donne completed a three-point play. The Hens shot 31 percent (13-of-42) in the opening 20 minutes and outrebounded the Monarchs, 34-24.

What Are The Stages Of Alzheimers? Determine Signs Of Early ...

By Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Susan Scanland, MSN, CRNP, GNP-BC, CDP

Baby Boomer adult children and spouses of persons with confusion often ask me ?What are the Stages of Alzheimers? ?What stage is my aging family member in??wonder Baby Boomers.? Diagnosis of dementia and memory loss in seniors should be done promptly; as soon as forgetfulness begins to affect daily function.? Atrophy (brain shrinkage) occurs as the diagnosis is delayed! Unfortunately, the average family waits two years to visit their primary care provider for help. By then, the family often realizes they have fallen into the role of stressed caregiver!

No two individuals have an identical course of symptom progression.?? The total length of each person?s Early, Middle and Late Stage Alzheimers? course may range from two years in one person to two decades in another individual.

In each of the three stages, assessments evaluate the ABC?s of Alzheimer?s disease: A: ADL-activities of daily living (level of ability to care for oneself), B: behavioral changes, actions related to the disease?s impact on the brain and C: cognitive changes, which include memory, ability to communicate and understand. So, exactly,? What Are the Stages of Alzheimers??

Early Memory Loss (Mild Alzheimer?s Stage)

  • A for ADL (Activities of Daily Living): There is difficulty preparing for social events, taking care of one?s household and doing routine tasks like shopping and keeping appointments.? The home may appear unkempt and disorganized in the early memory loss phase of Alzheimer?s.? Meals may be skipped or nutritionally imbalance.
  • B for Behavior: The person may appear depressed or short-tempered as early memory loss begins. The individual often exhibits apathy; lacking the motivation to plan or take action.? Forgetfulness may cause anxiety and difficulty relaxing.? Subtle or obvious personality changes often occur.
  • C for Cognition: Memory changes may result in forgetting recent conversations and appointments, confusion with directions or becoming lost on a familiar path or route. Judgment may be affected when driving or with financial matters during the early memory loss (mild) stage of Alzheimer?s.

Moderate Alzheimers Dementia (Middle Stage)

  • A for ADL: Basic activities of daily living need assistance.? The person?s wardrobe?may not blend well and they often appear disheveled.? Progression through this moderate Alzheimers dementia stage may require a gradual increase of another?s assistance for eating, dressing, bathing and toileting. The person forgets the sequence of steps for self-care .
  • B for Behavior: There is a gradual loss in goal-directed behavior.? The person may forget what his actions were earlier and repeat them again.? Anxiety may cause wandering, pacing or ?shadowing? behaviors (following someone else?s activity).? The sleep/wake cycle often is disturbed with waking at night and increased napping during the day.? Fears of someone stealing from them may increase and result in ?hoarding? behaviors.? Paranoid feelings that someone is against them are common. They may become angry, defensive or accusatory.? Visual hallucinations (seeing someone who is not present) may occur during the middle (moderate) stage.
  • C for Cognition: There may be difficulty in recognizing extended family and friends.? Socialization and entering new environments must be planned carefully, as not to overwhelm the person.? Safety issues become paramount; as judgment is further impaired in regards to risk for accidental injury; both inside and outside the home.? Adverse drug events (overdosing or skipping doses) are common if the person is self-administering medication (not recommended)!

Last Stage of Alzheimers (Late/Severe/Advanced Stage)

  • A for ADL: Dependence increases the amount of time and efforts to help the person with bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring positions and eating.? Urinary and fecal incontinence (accidents) progress in this last stage of Alzheimers.
  • B for Behavior: Most persons in this stage are affected by one or more of the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).? These include calling out things repeatedly or verbal outbursts of anger and fear.? Hallucinations are usually visual (seeing people from early parts of their lives or images of their childhood days).? Delusions are false beliefs, including deceased family members being alive in their room, or believing they are still busy with their occupation.
  • C for Cognition: There are varying degrees of disorientation among different people:? most not knowing what year it is, where they live, and who their loved ones are. Recognition of family members and identification of personal items often fades.? There is a loss of recall, so recent visitors are forgotten over short periods of time.? Vocabulary decreases and language becomes limited, along with repetition of common phrases (i.e.? ?This is not my house?.I want to go home??).

If you, as one of the Baby Boomers, or a worried spouse, are concerned that your loved one may have any stage of Alzheimer?s disease, don?t delay in contacting your primary care provider to discuss the above symptoms.? Remove the angst from this challenging situation by accessing the ?Family Guide to Memory Evaluation? information product.? This will help to get the Early, Middle and Late Stage Alzheimers properly diagnosed and treated. Research reveals that FDA-approved Alzheimer?s medications slow down behavioral and functional deterioration. This is true across all three stages, even in the moderate Alzheimers dementia stage and later, in the advanced stage. So it?s never too late to get help!
